Billy's Way Home is a social, street outreach to our "home"less communities in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in April of 2021, we provide essential needs to the homeless individuals that we serve weekly. What we have found out is that the #1 essential need is connection. Once homeless, it is difficult or even impossible to get reconnected with a social network. And, once a person loses that.... they've lost the last thread to the fabric of society. The sense of belonging to a community is gone. Relationships are gone. It doesn't take long for feelings of DISconnection and isolation to take over. Stereotypes and myths about the homeless follow them and lead to total isolation. Those who are homeless are shunned and constantly experience dehumanizing and unfair treatment. They are often feared, mistrusted, and ignored by society for being homeless and for having a substance abuse disorder and/or a mental health challenge. Recovery is dependent on strong social support systems. We give everyone a strong, healthy social connection week after week. Probably the only one they get all week. We've been told many times that they look forward to Saturdays every week. We go to the same area in order to build relationships with people.  Any discussion about homelessness must begin on the streets where we meet the people, learn their names and faces and hears their stories.  Our beautiful friends/volunteers that come out are their support, their community that they have lost. Good conversations that had become rare or (worse yet adversarial, even abusive), return. Eye contact, with which human beings acknowledge their mutual humanity, returns. Human touch is but a memory to many. We sit beside them. We give handshakes, hugs, fist bumps and high fives! Bit by bit, connections with the social fabric are being stitched back together. We would love for you to join our community. It's life changing for many of us as well as them.
